The Marvel Collection And Star Wars

 Stan Lee

Marvel“Stan Lee's Marvel Revolution extended beyond the characters and storylines.”

Stan Lee is an American comic book writer, editor and former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

History and Background

In collaboration with several artists, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Stan Lee co-created Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, the Silver Surfer, The Avengers and many other fictional characters for Marvel.

Lee led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation during an era now referred to as The Marvel Revolution.

In 1984, Stan Lee was awarded The National Medal of Arts by the United States Congress, the highest honour awarded to an individual artist in the United States.  Previous recipients include Georgia O'Keefe, William de Kooning and Bob Dylan.

Ideas and Inspirations

Stan Lee’s Marvel Revolution extended beyond the characters and storylines, to the way in which comic books engaged the audience and created a community between the readers and the creators.

Additionally, he pioneered and advocated the use of comic books to comment on social issues of the time, including bigotry, injustice and discrimination.

This got him into some hot water with the rather conservative Comics Code Authority but Stan wouldn't yield, he continued to pursue what he believed in and what he knew his audience wanted; thus the code changed.

There is a long established heritage for contemporary sequential art which represents the struggles, the triumphs, the trials and the wonder of the human condition. Whilst comic books take this to a level of fantasy, we can see through Stan Lee’s work the desire and motivation to ground these narratives in reality; enabling each and every one of us to relate to the messages being conveyed. What is so great about these gorgeous pieces is that Stan Lee himself curated this collection, all chosen by him because they have special meaning to him! It`s a good reason to purchase and because he has hand signed each one these are very special to Marvel Fans.

Star Wars Marvel

This November sees an out-of-this-world new collection landing in galleries nationwide; Star Wars Marvel.

Translated into limited edition art for the first time in collaboration with Marvel's fine art publisher, Choice Fine Art and Acme Archives, this collection of Star Wars comic book covers printed by Marvel celebrates one of the most famous film franchises of all time and encapsulates the battle between good and evil which both Star Wars and Marvel are recognised for.

It is rumoured that George Lucas initially approached Stan Lee in the mid-1970s when the first of the Star Wars film was still in production. With a timeless concept, complex, well-drawn characters and an underlying battle between good and evil, Stan Lee – who is responsible for the creation some of the most iconic superheroes in popular culture today - recognised something special in the burgeoning franchise, and so the Star Wars Marvel comic series was born. Published between 1977 - 1986, it was the first official comic book adaptation of Star Wars and the meeting of minds between two highly influential creative talents proved a to be a smash hit on its release.

Penned and inked by some of the greatest comic book artists and illustrators, including Carmine Infantino, Walt Simonson and Al Williamson, and chosen, curated and hand-signed by Stan Lee, the new collection pays tribute to some the most memorable Star Wars characters. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, the Stormtroopers, R2-D2, C-3P0 and the greatest villain of all time, Darth Vader, all make an appearance in the series. The new collection consists of six images available in both boxed canvas and giclee on paper editions. Prices start from £695 and portfolio sets are also available.

The new Star Wars film The Force Awakes is predicted to set the record for the biggest global box-office opening this December, but before that don’t miss this epic new collection of limited edition art and be one of the first to own a slice of iconic pop culture history.
